Love: A free gift from the Father (Part 2)

“Fruit of the Spirit” Love Devotional Series

…Unexpectedly, about four years ago I became fed up and desired change. I could no longer walk this very lonely and empty path. I wanted to be free from fear. You may be wondering, “what does fear have to do with love?” Plenty! Love is the opposite of fear. Yes, I’m sure you’ve read that faith is the opposite of fear, but the Bible also says, “…perfect love casts out fear…(1 John 4:18).” Fear? Yes, fear!

I was afraid to date, afraid of being single forever, afraid to advance, but afraid to remain stagnant – FEAR had an intense grip on me! But, the more I prayed and really pursued God, the more I began experiencing His love! It was such a beautiful moment of recognizing that it is, in fact, God’s will to love us! I had been running for so long, trying to hide from love; I didn’t realize that by not allowing God to love me and ultimately love through me that this was also one of the relationships I had sabotaged! WOW! Yet, He still extended His grace to cover my fear and give me His Spirit of love. (see 2 Timothy 1:7).

Although, this was a promising beginning, the journey did not end there. Now that I had been introduced to the phenomenal power of God’s love; I had to now open myself up to trust God to love me the way that His Word promised. God revealed that by me choosing a life of love, He is always near to me. The Bible says in 1 John 4:12 that “If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.” It’s such a blessing to know that God is always near those who exhibit His characteristics. I started to notice subtle changes in my behaviors, attitude, and desires…To be continued.
